Class Teacher - Miss S Nichols

Welcome to the Pelicans class.
This page will give you all the information you need about what is happening in our class, such as PE days, homework, trips, events and the areas that we will be learning about during the term.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 4 in Pelicans class.
We are looking forward to another exciting term, with lots to learn and many exciting opportunities to take part in!
English - In our English and Guided Reading lessons, we will be focusing on two key texts, both of which link to our history unit of The Anglo Saxons. Our fiction text is an exciting Anglo-Saxon story, which tells of an intelligent princess who flees a wicked king, Algar of Mercia, by hiding in a tree with her friends. We will be working towards writing a diary entry in the first person and then comparing the princess to that of an Anglo-Saxon child.
We will also be rehearsing a playscript – ‘The Bee Musical’ and will be performing this to parents/carers during the last week in the term. Please keep a look out for dates and costumes that may be required.
Mathematics - In Maths, we will be moving onto fraction units 1 and 2, continuing with a big focus on times tables facts and their families. This includes the inverse and division facts too, so please do keep up the good work on TTRS! Please also keep practicing on U R Brainy MTC too. Aiming for a score above 20/25. Later in the term, we will move on to Unit 10 Decimals, learning about how to convert between a fraction, a decimal and a percentage.
Science - Our unit this term will link closely to our unit within DT. In science we will be recognising that we need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light, we will be noticing that light is reflected from different surfaces, recognising that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect our eyes and finally recognising that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object. Whilst, covering these objectives we will also be making an electrical torch for our final DT project.
Term 4 also sees the exciting weeks of British Science week and Careers week. Your children will be participating in a fabulous hands-on workshop carried out by Science Boffins! They will be coming into school to work with your child and also present a fun and engaging workshop as well as a whole school assembly. This year’s theme is Curiosity- What is your question? And will be commencing from Monday 6th March to Friday 15th.
Careers week will be the week after and we have a range of visitors coming into school to talk to your child about the different career paths on offer and what paths these can lead to. There will also be a careers dress up day but more details and the exact date will be sent our via our class email and on Facebook too.
History- Within History this term, we will be looking closely at the lives and the culture of the Anglo Saxons and the Scots. This theme will run alongside our literacy units too. We will be focusing on the life after the Romans, explore who the Anglo Saxons and the Scots were, where they came from, and why they settled in Britain. Pupils will learn about their daily life, including homes, food, farming, beliefs, and laws, as well as the importance of kingdoms, warriors and kings. They will also discover how the Scots and Anglo Saxons shaped Britain through conflict, cooperation, and cultural traditions, helping to form the early nations of the UK.
Religion and World Views (RWV) - This term, our focus will be on Christianity with an enquiry question of- What do Christians learn from the creation story? We are in the process of organising a visit to our local church and more details about this visit will sent out to you nearer the time.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) - Our unit this term is ‘Healthy Me’. Within this unit, we will be covering how to keep ourselves fit and healthy including foods, exercise, medicines/drugs and healthy friendships too.
Computing - In Computing, we will be learning the digital skills of photo editing.
Spanish – Year 3 pupils will be learning their numbers to 0-15 and then 16-31 in Spanish. They will then move onto learning the days of the week. Year 4 pupils will be studying how the Spanish use different adjectives for their different animals and also learning on the farm animals too.
Art – This term we will be studying Anglo Saxon jewellery and different clay skills and techniques. We will be working towards a final piece of creating a 3d jewellery item from the Anglo Saxon and the Scots period.
Physical Education (PE) - PE lessons will take place on a Wednesday this term with JB Sports, children will develop their skills in football. We will also be continuing with our swimming lessons every Tuesday. Children should arrive at school in their PE kit on PE days (black jumper or school jumper, PE t-shirt/white t-shirt, and black leggings, joggers, or shorts). Swimming costumes should be worn underneath PE kit, with underwear, towel and goggles brought in a separate bag please. It is important that your child is able to undress and dress independently for swimming sessions, including fastening their own shoes so please practice this with them if they still need some help. Earrings must be removed for PE; newly pierced ears can be covered with plasters for football, although this can’t be done for swimming. Your children are now becoming more confident within the pool and may now require a pair of goggles. Please speak with your child to see whether they require these for this next term. Thank you.
Learning at Home - We greatly value your support in helping your child continue their learning beyond the classroom. Daily reading at home will significantly improve vocabulary,
comprehension, and enjoyment of books. Children should read a variety of texts, and their reading record should be signed each time please. Weekly spellings will continue during some weeks this term. We are now in a super position where your child is becoming more confident with these so you may see some repeated spellings- these are the ones that are still a little challenging. These will be sent home as and when needed this term.
Reminder- Please keep signing your child’s reading log so that certificates can be easily issued. We read daily in the classroom, so these can be recorded as a read too.
Multiplication Tables - Regular practice of times tables is essential. Please encourage your child to log onto TT Rock Stars frequently and as stated above, U R Brainy MTC regularly in preparation for the government test in June.
As always, please do come and speak to us if there is anything you need to discuss or if you have any questions.
Kind Regards,
Miss Nichols
