Dolphins
Class Teacher - Miss S Nichols
Welcome to the Dolphins class.
Hello and welcome to Year 6 Dolphins class. This page will give you all the information you need about what is happening in our class, such as PE days, homework, trips, events and the areas that we will be learning about during the term.
This term will be focused on the theme of Evolution and Inheritance. Therefore, all learning within Term 5, will be linked closely around the subject Science, with the children collecting evidence to answer an enquiry question of- Why does the giraffe have a long neck and a camel have a hump?
Within their science unit of Evolution and Inheritance, the children will be researching and studying the work of naturalists Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace and their theories of natural selection and the survival of the fittest to answer a LQ of- Do you believe in the theory of evolution? We cannot wait for their conclusions!
We are also very lucky to be welcoming ‘School Cambridge Science Centre’ into school during Term 5, to work with all Year 5/6 classes. They will be working scientifically and investigating micro-organisms and understanding bacteria and disease. A very fascinating day we are very much looking forward to!
In English and Guided Reading, our learning will be based on The Complete Just-So Stories by Rudyard Kipling. This includes 14 much loved tales including, ‘How the camel got his hump’ and ‘How the rhinoceros got his skin’. When writing their own narrative, children will describe settings, characters and the atmosphere created. They will integrate dialogue to convey characters and advance the action.
Art will also compliment our theme, as the children will be experimenting within a range of elements and skills within art to create a detailed ape, monkey or chimpanzee around the theme of evolution and the mammal adapting to hssuit its environment. This term will see a child led project with the children selecting their own skills and creating their own mediums. We cannot wait to see their final designs.
Within Maths, Dolphins class will be continuing with the unit of Measure- Area, Perimeter and Volume. We then move onto Statistics and Geometry- both properties of shape and position and direction.
We are so proud of our pupils for winning the Battle of the Bands on TTRS last term, we will be setting another during Term 5. It is so valuable for all pupils to know their times tables thoroughly to strengthen and deepen their understanding with reasoning and word problems. Just by logging onto TTRS twice a week makes a huge difference to your child’s knowledge.
All teachers gave out new login details but please speak to your child’s teacher if you need another copy. Thank you for your support within TTRS, it is greatly appreciated.
PE for Year 6 Dolphins will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Tuesdays, will be outdoor athletics, and on Fridays, we are looking forward to archery with JB. Please arrive at school in your academy PE kit (white T shirt, black joggers and a black jumper/school jumper) and leave earrings at home on both of those days.
Please do keep a look out for any updates and photographs of your children’s learning on our Facebook page. Further to this, please keep your photo permission slips updated if you wish to have your child photographed during any activities. Please come to school in your PE kit and leave earrings at home on both of those days.
SATS Information
SATs will take place this year during the week of Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May. Your child will be familiar with the format of all SATs papers they will be completing, as regular practice test papers have been carried out throughout the previous terms. Please reassure your child that the exams are statutory for all primary schools, and they do not affect their further education in any way.
A free breakfast will be available for every Year 6 pupil, during the week of SATs, starting from 8.30am every morning in the hall.
Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a great Term 5. Enjoy your Easter break with your families.
