Pelicans
Class Teacher - Mrs K Sanghvi
Welcome to the Pelicans class.
Welcome back to school and to an exciting new term! Term 5 will be packed with fascinating topics, creative challenges, and opportunities for the children to stretch their minds. We are looking forward to supporting their learning and seeing their progress this term.
Our Theme for the term is: Ancient Egypt
Our enquiry question is: Why was the Ancient Egyptian civilization located near the River Nile?
History
This term, we will learn all about the fascinating culture of Ancient Egypt, discovering their amazing achievements, finding out what day to day life was like for Ancient Egyptians and learning about their lasting legacy. Our art, DT and music work will also be based around this Ancient Egyptian theme as we create drawings, paintings, compositions and food inspired by Ancient Egyptian life.
English
This term, during our guided reading sessions, we will be looking at two books. The first is ‘The Story of Tutankhamun’ by Patricia Cleveland-Peck, which is a non-fiction text all about the famous boy king. We will also read extracts from ‘Secrets of a Sun King’ by Emma Carroll, an exciting adventure story all about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Our first writing unit this term will be a recount about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by the famous archaeologist Howard Carter. We will write poems about the sights and sounds of Ancient Egypt and finally, will write a description of all the hustle and bustle around the River Nile
Maths
In Maths, we will develop our knowledge of fractions by introducing the concept of mixed numbers and improper fractions. Children will explore what happens when a fraction is more than 1 (that is, the numerator is greater than the denominator). They will use this to write, compare and order mixed numbers and will then look at how mixed numbers can be written as improper fractions and vice versa. Children will then move on to equivalent fractions using fraction strips and a fraction wall to aid understanding of fraction families. Following this, children will further develop their understanding of how to simplify fractions.
Children will also extend their knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions to fractions where the answers are greater than 1. Children will learn, as long as the denominators are equal, they can add the numerators. Children start to explore subtracting a fraction from a whole number, which will support their more in-depth exploration of fractions in Year 5. Finally, children continue to find a fraction of an amount, working with divisions within times-tables they have learnt.
Science
In science, we will be learning about human bodies, with a focus on how our digestive systems work and on also on our different types of teeth and their functions.
Computing
In computing, we are learning about programming this term and will use the program ‘scratch’ to put together our own computer programs.
PSHE
In PSHE, this term’s focus is on relationships. We will look at friendships and how we can support others, include them and show respect to one another.
Religion and World Views
In our RWV lessons, we will be examining the Easter story and exploring why Christians refer to the day Jesus died as ‘Good Friday’.
PE:
This will be our final term of swimming for this year. The lessons will continue to be on a Tuesday morning and the children will walk to and from the swimming pool site on the High Street. It would be very helpful if you could ensure that your child knows how to fasten all of their clothing and shoes and how to turn inside out clothes back the right way again!
Your child will need to bring these items in a bag:
-
a swimming costume or swimming shorts
-
a towel
-
a brush/comb
-
goggles (optional, but VERY helpful!)
On Fridays, we will be working on our running, throwing and jumping skills in athletics lessons. Please can children arrive in full academy PE kit with earrings removed every Tuesday and Friday.
Spanish
The children are continuing to build their confidence in understanding and speaking Spanish. The children will learn how to recognise and say the names of the items found in a classroom and begin to construct simple sentences in Spanish.
We look forward to sharing the children’s achievements and progress throughout Term 5. Thank you for your continued support as we embark on another exciting chapter of learning together! 😊
Kind Regards,
Mrs Sanghvi and Miss Burrows
