Puffins

Class Teacher - Mrs A Jarvis

Welcome to the Puffins class.

This page will give you all the information you need about what is happening in our class, such as PE days, homework, trips, events and the areas that we will be learning about during the term.

This term, we will be covering a wide range of subjects, each designed to challenge, inspire, and support your child’s progress across the curriculum.

English and Guided Reading - This term we will be focusing on two key texts: One Plastic Bag – a beautifully illustrated picture book that highlights the importance of caring for our environment. Through this story, children will explore themes of sustainability, responsibility, and global awareness, while developing their inference and comprehension skills. Writing opportunities will include writing a narrative.

Little people, Big Dreams: David Attenborough – a non-fiction text that takes readers on the journey of Sir David Attenborough. This book will not only support reading for information and developing research skills but also link directly to our Geography.

Mathematics- In Maths, we will be continuing with addition and subtraction using both the formal written method and mental strategies. We will also be looking at statistics and how we record and use them effectively.

Science- Our topic this term is food chains. We will investigate how food chains and food webs are needed to sustain life and how they work.

Geography – Our topic this term is ‘Earth Heroes’. The children will be learning about some key individuals and how they have helped to protect our environment and wildlife. We will be investigating the life and work of David Attenborough, Jane Goodall and Greta Thunberg.

Religion and World Views (RWV)- Our theme in RWV is Hinduism. The key concepts and beliefs of Hinduism will be explored of dharma (duty) and Karma (good actions/bad action) and how this affects Samsara (circle of life) and moksha (free from the cycle of samsara). This unit introduces how Hindus worship and pray at home at a shrine and in the Mandir. It also introduces the festivals of Diwali and Raksha Bandhan. and again, focuses on the concepts of dharma (duty).

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) - Our unit this term is Celebrating differences. We will focus on our families, how we treat each other and compliments.

Computing- In Computing, children will be focusing on data logging. Children will collect data and learn how to use in correctly. E-safety will remain a continuous thread across the curriculum.

Spanish- Year 4 pupils will develop their language skills through topics including parts of the body, the family and Christmas. This will build upon previous learning and support them in holding simple conversations in Spanish.

Art - The children will be continuing to develop their skills sketching and drawing. They will work towards creating a portrait of Sir David Attenborough.

Physical Education (PE) - PE lessons will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This term, children will develop gymnastic and handball skills. Children should arrive at school in their PE kit on PE days (black jumper or school jumper, PE t-shirt/white t-shirt, and black leggings, joggers, or shorts). Earrings must be removed for PE; newly pierced ears can be covered with plasters.

Learning at Home- We greatly value your support in helping your child continue their learning beyond the classroom. Daily reading at home will significantly improve vocabulary, comprehension, and enjoyment of books. Children should read a variety of texts, and their reading record should be signed each time please. Weekly spellings will also be sent home for your child to practice at your convenience.

Multiplication Tables: Regular practice of times tables is essential. Please encourage your child to log onto TT Rock Stars frequently and also U R Brainy MTC regularly in preparation for the government text in June.

As always, please do come and speak to us if there is anything you need to discuss!

Kind Regards,

Mrs Jarvis and Mrs Gilligan
