Science

Science

At Mablethorpe Primary Academy, we want all pupils to develop a sense of curiosity about the world around them and an understanding of how science shapes our everyday lives. Through practical investigation, observation and enquiry, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to ask questions, seek answers and think scientifically.

We aim to inspire children to become curious, resilient learners who understand the importance of science in the modern world. By making links between classroom learning and real-life experiences, pupils learn how scientific knowledge helps us understand and improve the world around us.

What We Learn

Through the science curriculum, pupils develop knowledge and understanding of:

  • Biology, including living things, habitats and the human body.
  • Chemistry, including materials and their properties.
  • Physics, including forces, light, sound and electricity.
  • Scientific enquiry and investigation.
  • Working scientifically through observing, questioning, testing and evaluating.

As pupils move through the school, they build upon prior learning, develop their scientific vocabulary and become increasingly confident in planning investigations and drawing conclusions from evidence.

Our Curriculum Drivers

Aspiration

Pupils learn about the work of scientists, inventors and innovators who have changed the world. Through science, children are encouraged to be ambitious, think creatively and recognise the opportunities available within STEM-related careers.

Community

Pupils develop an understanding of how science affects their local community, environment and wider world. They learn about sustainability, healthy lifestyles and their responsibility towards the world around them.

Experiences

We believe science is best learned through hands-on experiences. Through investigations, experiments, outdoor learning and enrichment opportunities, pupils experience science in meaningful and memorable ways.

Communication

Science provides opportunities for pupils to ask questions, explain their thinking, discuss findings and present conclusions using accurate scientific vocabulary.

Belonging

All pupils are encouraged to participate, explore and succeed in science. We promote inclusive learning environments where children feel confident to take risks, learn from mistakes and celebrate discoveries together.

Learning in Action

In Science, pupils:

  • Ask questions and explore new ideas.
  • Carry out investigations and experiments.
  • Observe changes over time.
  • Collect, record and interpret data.
  • Draw conclusions using evidence.
  • Work collaboratively and share their findings.
  • Apply their scientific knowledge to real-life situations.

Scientific Vocabulary

Vocabulary is explicitly taught across all year groups to help pupils communicate and think scientifically. Please see our vocabulary progression maps for further details.

Through Science at MPA, We Aim to Develop:

  • Curious learners.
  • Critical thinkers.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Resilient problem-solvers.
  • Environmentally aware citizens.
  • Pupils who understand the role science plays in everyday life and future innovation.

Subject Intent Statements:

Science

Children will increase their knowledge and understanding of our world and develop skills associated with scientific enquiry. We will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence.

Science for our children

Science helps me understand about living things and the world around me.
